Perhaps because of the relentlessly bleak climate, many students now accept that their path to a stable lifestyle may involve years pin balling their way up the ranks with a mixture of interning, contract work and networking. As a result, they have been calling for more work experience – like internships or field work – to be built into their education.

The provincial government has partnered with industry and the New Brunswick Teen Apprentice Program (NBTAP) to support an initiative that leads to early entry into the apprenticeship program. “This program is a great example of how our government is supporting the environment that matches the skilled labour requirements of employers with the training opportunities for our young people,” said Premier David Alward.

Each year Newfoundland and Labrador Laubach Literacy Council acknowledges the achievements of its students through the Student of the Year award. Aggie Snook of Stephenville has been selected to receive the NLLLC Student of the Year Achievement Award for 2012. As well, the Susie Day Volunteer of the Year Award was created to recognize those who demonstrate outstanding service through participation in and leadership of Laubach programs. This year’s recipient is Maureen Kennedy.

Each month NALD releases Library user statistics in a feature known as the Top 20 downloads/20 Plus téléchargés. The report examines the number of NALD Library documents, in both English and French, which are viewed and downloaded by visitors to the websites NALD and BDAA.

The four Atlantic premiers have agreed, through the Atlantic Workforce Partnership, to harmonize apprenticeship programs across the region and deliver online training to small and medium-sized businesses. This will make the region a national leader in the delivery of critical skills training.

Work is where confidence matters most and if we develop poor confidence at work, reversing it is a must. There’s nothing innate about poor confidence. It comes from negative thoughts and experiences. To develop workplace confidence, therefore, we simply need to replace this negativity with positive thinking and actions.

The National Adult Literacy Database (NALD) will host a webinar on its digital library Wednesday, May 8, 2013, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Atlantic time.

“The Graduate Mentorship Program provides graduates with a work experience in the private sector related to their skills and education, and assists to bridge education with work experience,” says PEI Minister of Innovation and Advance Learning Allen Roach. “This program continues to gain popularity as it benefits both the graduate and the employer.”

There’s still time to participate in Canadian Literacy and Learning Network’s (CLLN’s) national survey of the Literacy and Essential Skills (L/ES) workforce. The survey is scheduled to end on April 30.

The Sabtuan Regional Vocational Training Centre (SRVTC ), Cree School Board, is on a native reserve in Quebec with 1,400 inhabitants, and serves nine different communities. When Michael Lewis, Director of the SRVTC, discovered that in a group of 16 students starting a program, they were lucky to end up with six to eight, he knew that applying the techniques he already knew would not result in the change he was looking for.

Everything Present in the Seed Community Leadership Training is a curriculum for community members to discover their innate leadership values and skills. The curriculum presents materials and tools to help community groups and literacy programs nurture those inherent gifts.
